It was created onJanuary 1 ,1999 as a result of the Local Government Reorganization Act of 1998. Its administrative seat is the city ofGliwice , although the city is not part of the county (it constitutes a separate city county). The county contains four towns:Knurów , convert|8|km|mi|0|abbr=on south of Gliwice,Pyskowice , convert|12|km|mi|0|abbr=on north of Gliwice,Toszek , convert|22|km|mi|0|abbr=on north-west of Gliwice, andSośnicowice , convert|10|km|mi|0|abbr=on west of Gliwice.The county covers an area of convert|663.35|km2|sqmi|1. As of 2006 its total population is 114,963, out of which the population of Knurów is 39,823, that of Pyskowice is 19,127, that of Toszek is 3,822, that of Sośnicowice is 1,747, and the rural population is 50,444.
