- Sandy High School
Sandy High School is a public
high school in Sandy,Oregon ,United States . The school's mascot is the Pioneer, to represent the town's historic background. The school colors are crimson and black. Rivals include, the Sam Barlow bruins and the Gresham GophersThe high school, originally intended for about 900 students (more due to the addition of portable clasrooms) is facing overcrowding with a student body consisting of over 1400 persons. A board was set up to determine if a new high school will be constructed, and has found that a new school is required, though its conclusions still must pass a new vote.
This upcoming november during the election, the new high school bond will be voted on.
The school made statewide news when in 2005 the teachers voted to go on strike. The strike lasted three weeks with little progress being made towards a deal (a compromise constructed by Governor
Ted Kulongoski was accepted by the teachers but turned down by the members of the school board.), until finally a deal was reached.More controversy and resistance arose, when at a school board meeting, principal Jim Saxton alluded to the possibility of escalating the dress code to Include Identification badges. Students protested this threatened action by wearing shirts saying GANG(Guys'n'girls Against Nonsense Government) and "Hello, my name is #######!(Referring to the possibility of the ID badges)
In 2007, Saxton retired, and was replaced by Brian Heinze. With his arrival, he introduced the PRIDE program (Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Determination, Excellence). Whether or not this program will be effective is yet to be seen.
