The Van Diemen's Land Company was created in 1824 Fact|date=June 2007, received a Royal Charter in 1825 [ [http://www.privy-council.org.uk/output/page44.asp Royal Charters, Privy Council website] ] and was granted 250,000 acres (1,000 km²) in northwest Tasmania in 1826 Fact|date=June 2007. The company was a group of London merchants who planned a wool growing venture to supply the needs of the British textile industry. The company established its headquarters at Circular Head. The company retains much of the original land grant and is widely-believed to be the last chartered company still operating.
