Cavanagh was born in
Ottawa, Ontario ,Canada , and moved with his parents to a small village inGhana when he was six years old. In his teens, the family moved toMontreal where he started high school. While attending Queen's University inKingston, Ontario , he became interested in theater and music and playedice hockey and varsitybasketball . He graduated with degrees in English,biology and education. Tom also has a sister who is a Religion teacher at a Catholic School in Ontario, Canada.Cavanagh is married to Maureen Grise, a photo editor for "
