Curriculum

N.M. offers the following courses:

Degree courses

  • Bachelor of Commerce(B.Com), the regular graduation programme, affiliated to the University of Mumbai.
  • The Bachelor in Management Studies(BMS), which is a three year course affiliated to the University of Mumbai.
  • Bachelor in Accounting and Finance(BAF), which is also a three year course affiliated to the University of Mumbai.

Vocational courses, more practical than theoretical, recognized by the University of Mumbai.

  • Marketing and Salesmanship
  • Accounting and Auditing
  • Travel and Tourism

These two-year vocational courses can be started after the Secondary School Certificate (S.S.C.) examinations. At the end the student appears for the Higher Secondary Certificate examinations, but with different subjects than the normal ones. After that there is the opportunity to join the first year of the B.Com.

The college has recently diversified into various extra curricular activities. Its students are actively involved in the various College Festivals of other Mumbai Colleges, such as St.Xavier's "Malhar", Sydenham's "Brouhaha" and IIT-B's "Mood Indigo". And it has its own festival Umang..

Structure of the academic year

The academic year begins at the same time as other Mumbai colleges in June as soon as the S.S.C. results are out and the admission procedures are over. Around three months of holiday are included in the academic year. Unlike other colleges, which have a system of units and semesters, N.M. has only three semesters, each followed by an exam of 100 marks each per subject. The N.M. student starts his or her first semester just after admission and takes his or her first exams just before the Diwali break, a long holiday of nearly a month. Results are announced just after the break and the second semester begins. Exams for the second semester are scheduled just after the students return from their Christmas holidays, a period of around 10 days. The third and final semester is followed by the most important exam period of three; the student's success heavily depends on his or her performance in this examination. After the final semester there is a break of around two months.

Rules

The college has a reputation for strictness with regard to attendance and various criteria for passing. N.M. even has the rule of compulsory opting for mathematics in FYJC (First Year Junior College). Should a student wish to continue with the same subject in SYJC (Second Year Junior College), they will have to get a minimum aggregate of around 45% in mathematics in their First Year Junior College exams, or be forced to opt for Secretarial Practice.

A minimum of 75% attendance for all students is strictly adhered to and if a student fails to comply with the rules after warnings they are liable to expulsion. As soon as their final semester results are declared, most of them join coaching classes and get a head start with their studies for the next academic year.

Festivals

College has around 20 societies and clubs where students can join in according to their interests.

UMANG and DRISHTI are the two festivals held annually by the college. UMANG is NM College's cultural festival whereas DRISHTI is its management festival. Students work enthusiastically to make the festivals a success. The main attractions of UMANG are dance, drama, fashion show and of DRISHTI are pronite, various management events.
