- Flag of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic
The flag of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was adopted in
1919 , to serve as the symbol of state of theUkrainian SSR . Details of the official flag changed periodically before the break-up of theSoviet Union in 1991, but all were based on thered flag of theBolshevik Revolution .The first flag was red with the gold Cyrillic sans-serif letters У.С.С.Р. ("USSR", for "Ukrayinskaya Sotsialisticheskaya Sovetskaya Respublika", ‘Ukrainian SSR’ in Russian—the name would change slightly in 1936). In the 1930s, a gold border was added.
In 1937, a new flag was adopted, with a small gold
hammer and sickle added above the gold Cyrillic serif letters У.Р.С.Р. ("URSR", for "Ukrayins’ka Radyans’ka Sotsialistychna Respublika" in Ukrainian). In the 1940s, the design was altered, with sans-serif letters placed in the top-left corner and a larger hammer and sickle below.
The last flag dropped the lettering, and added a blue stripe below and star above the hammer and sickle. It was adopted as the official flag of the Ukrainian SSR on
