Association of Muslim Professionals

The Association of Muslim Professionals (AMP) is a community self-help group based in Singapore. It was established on 10 October 1991, as an important resolution of the First National Convention of Singapore Malay/Muslim Professionals which was held on 6 and 7 October 1990. The Convention was attended by 500 Malay/Muslim professionals who met to brainstorm new directions for the community. AMP was formed with core programmes in education, human resource development, social development and research.

AMP is a registered charitable organisation and is accorded the status of an Institution of Public Character.

Clients

Both volunteers and full-time officers work together to run programmes in educational enrichment, work skills training, family life and research. These are to accelerate the development of the community and optimise human potential.

To date AMP has served more than 200,000 clients from all walks of life and from all communities.

AMP also actively seeks to establish working relationships with corporate bodies, volunteer groups, community organisations and government agencies in joint projects for mutual benefit.

Internal Divisions

*AlHijrahThe AlHijrah division of AMP provides social services to disadvantaged and underprivileged families. Over the years, it has strategically implemented many developmental and social support programmes to assist these families in freeing themselves from the cycle of underdevelopment.

AlHijrah adopts a single platform approach in efforts to assist the underprivileged. The Adopt A Family & Youth Scheme (AFYS) is an all-encompassing scheme that represents a family-based approach in providing assistance to underprivileged families. A comprehensive range of services is made available to each family depending on their specific needs. These include counselling for the family members, educational assistance for the children and skills upgrading courses for adult members. Youths-at-risk assisted under the scheme are supported trhough various academic and non-academic developmental programmes with the ultimate objective of keeping them within the school system.

*Training & EducationThe Training & Education division studies and cahrts the direction for the community in the areas of training and education, by identifying trends and its impact and offering recommendations. The division also seeks to promote awareness amongst the community of the major strategic policies.

The division networks with all related ministries, statutory boards and non-government organisations so as to be able to tap on national thinking and resources in the areas of training and education. Whenever possible, the division leverages on relevant training and education campaigns and grants.

*Young AMPYoung AMP was officially launched on 10 October 2004. Its main objectives are to provide a platform to mobilise the energies and ideas of younger professionals to play their part in helping the Malay/Muslim community realise its aspirations; to allow professionals to build their network to gather and discuss their aspirations and concerns; to be a key vehicle for younger professionals to network and pursue their career development; and to be an avenue for young professionals who are interested to carry on AMP's mission and leadership in society into 21st century.

Young AMP devises programmes to engage younger professionals in various efforts to uplift the community and various dialogues to discuss contemporary issues of concern with both Malay/Muslim and non-Malay/Muslim professionals.

* [http://www.merculearning.com MERCU^TM Learning Point] MERCU^TM Learning Point positions itself to prepare the community to meet the need for a highly-skilled and educated population. It develops and implements high quality programmes in education, workers training and human resource development. It also runs a network of 9 centres which deal with preschool education, childcare programme, academic enrichment and work skills development.

* [http://www.amp.org.sg/rima Centre for Research on Islamic and Malay Affairs (RIMA)] The change from being a research division to a full-fledged research centre underscored the growing emphasis on research to support the provision of services, as well as on intellectual discourse and discussion on issues and developments within the Malay/Muslim community.

The centre undertakes research and provides a platform for the meeting of minds to barinstorm ideas and discuss important issues affectuing the community. RIMA's vision is to be a meaningful and effective research body that serves the interests of Singapore as well as the region and the larger international community.
