Coimbatore Medical College is a state government-run medical college recognized by the Medical Council of India. It is located in the city of Coimbatore, in Tamil Nadu, India.

History

The college was established in 1966 after some leading industrial families of the city donated the required land to the Tamil Nadu state government under the Chief Minister K. Kamaraj.

Location

The college is located on Avinashi road, one of the arterial roads in Coimbatore city and about 15 km from Coimbatore International Airport. The college is just opposite to Coimbatore Institute of Technology and near to The Jenney Club. This part of the city has a concentration of colleges and hospitals.

The Coimbatore Medical Collage Hospital, which is located in Trichy road, about 3 km from Coimbatore Junction, was established in 1909 during the British Raj.

Accreditation and affiliates

The Government Head Quarters Hospital near the Coimbatore Railway Junction is attached to the college and has been converted to a teaching medical institution. The college was affiliated to Madras University and later was transferred to Bharathiar University. Subsequently it was affiliated to Tamilnadu Dr M G R Medical University.

Facilities

The college has more than 30 departments with individual libraries and medical laboratories.There is a library blessed with all medical books and most journals and with internet facility. On campus accommodation is available with three mens hostels and a women's hostel. There is a cricket ground with a pavilion,an indoor stadium,two fully facilitated exam hall and an indoor auditorium.

• Dr. Palanivelu MCh - surgical gastroenterologist, specializes in laparoscopic surgery.
• Dr. Chandrashekhar - gastroenterologist, specializes in endoscopy and management of liver disease.
• Dr.P.Govindaraj- vascular surgeon
• Prof. V. G. Ramesh - neurosurgeon at Chennai, presently Professor of Neurosurgery, Institute of Neurology, Madras Medical College, Chennai.
• Dr. S. Boopathy Vijayaraghavan - radiologist and sonologist, Coimbatore.
