WesternGeco is the world's largest seismic contracting company. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the international oilfield services corporation Schlumberger Limited.

Business

WesternGeco provides worldwide reservoir imaging, monitoring, and development services, and has the geophysical industry's most extensive survey crews and data processing centers and the world's largest multiclient data library. Its services include seismic surveys, reservoir management, and electromagnetic surveys.

Geophysicists at oil companies use seismic data to evaluate the potential for hydrocarbon production in an area, to determine new well locations, and to monitor that production from existing wells. The revenues of the company are closely tied to worldwide exploration and production activity, but the company does not itself make drilling decisions or produce hydrocarbons.

History

WesternGeco was formed by the merger in 2000 of two of the world's largest seismic contractors, Western Geophysical and Geco-Prakla. Schlumberger, owners of Geco-Prakla paid cash to Baker Hughes, which then owned Western, for a 70% stake in a joint venture of the combined companies.
