Brunswick Secondary College

Brunswick Secondary College

Brunswick Secondary College (BSC) is located at 47 Dawson Street, Brunswick 3056 Victoria, Australia. It is one of two government secondary schools in Brunswick, the other one being Sydney Road Community School. BSC was created during the 1990s via an amalgamation of Brunswick Technical School, Brunswick Girls School, Brunswick East Secondary School and Brunswick High School. BSC offers a full curriculum with many electives from years 7 to 12. In the last decade, BSC has seen a steady improvement in its results in many areas, including VCE scores, and now attracts students from well beyond its neighbourhood zone. Enrolments were capped in 2006 at 820. Unusually for an inner-city school, BSC has substantial external grassed recreational areas, part of which were replaced in early 2008 with an artificial turf surface.

Learning environment

BSC has many facilities allowing a wide curriculum with many electives including: cooking, ceramics, table tennis, dance, Rock Eisteddfod, drama and woodwork. The languages offered at BSC are Mandarin Chinese, Italian and Arabic. Other features include the MATES program and VCE Early Start. The school also runs a SEAL (Select Entry Accelerated Learning) Program, which enables academically gifted students to complete years 7-10 in three years. A new Year 9 Learning Centre was completed early in 2007 with new computers and teaching rooms with electronic whiteboards.

Rock Eisteddfod Challenge

Students from the school won the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge 2007 Premier Grand Final with their performance of 'Solstice'. In addition to coming first, they were awarded the following prizes:
* The Edge Award of Excellence for Choreography
* Rock Eisteddfod Challenge Award of Excellence for Stage Use
* Nine Network Award of Excellence for Drama
* Calvin Klein Fragrances Award of Excellence for Set Design and Function
* Calvin Klein Fragrances Award of Excellence for Visual Enhancement

In 2006, students from BSC won the Open Division, with their performance of 'Overload' and the 2004 Small School Division, with their performance 'Unanana and the Enormous Elephant'. They also made finals in 2005 with their performance 'Billy the Punk'.

ASX Schools Sharemarket Game

BSC is renowned for its performance in the ASX Schools Sharemarket Game. 4 teams finished in the top 100 in Victoria and one team finishing 3rd in Game 1, 2007. Game 2 is in progress; BSC has started off on a very successful note, as ‘Show me the money’ has moved into a commanding position in the competition currently on $51,897.33, ranked 24th in Australia, 4th in Victoria and 1st in the school.
