Description
As with most other villages of Kerala, Neeleeswaram is also gifted with nature's abundant beauty. The Periyar River means ‘Great River’ and flows through the south of the village like a blue ribbon, giving it the serenity of an ashram.
The name of Neeleeswaram comes from the two words – ‘Neeli’ and ‘Swaram’. In ancient times, the place was a safe heaven of a blue bird called ‘Neeli’ and was known for the attractive voice of this bird. Even the nearby place, Malayattoor received its name from three words – ‘Mala’, ‘Aar’ and ‘Oor’ meaning ‘Hill’, ‘River’ and ‘Place’.
Neeleeswaram is part of the Malayattoor-Neeleeswaram Panchayat. Near to the main junction of Neeleeswaram, there is the Panchayath Office and Assumption Monastery Parish Church, SNDP Branch and LP School.
The east boundary of Neeleeswaram is the Pallipetta junction and a small stream of water flowing to Periyar. By the side of this stream, if you explore Neeleeswaram further, there is a very ancient pillar, marking the boundary between erstwhile princely states of Travancore and Cochin. It is a curious thing to watch the inscription of the Malayalam letters - 'Ko' and 'Thi' on each side of this pillar representing the names of these states. The residents call this pillar as ‘Kothi-Stone’. From the Pallipetta junction, there is a road to the south leading to 'Pallikkadavu' which is a small ferry leading to Cheranalloor St. Xaviours church. The road leading to north goes to a Tiles Factory.
Neeleeswaram junction is the center point of the road connecting nearby villages of Kottamam and Malayattoor. From this junction, there is road going to the north side passing through Jeevadan Convent, Honay corner and YMA junction. This road, leads to another beautiful village called Naduvattom. St:Antony's Church, LP School, Angel arts and sports club, 'Pullan's kavala', Pallamattom rice mill etc.. are some of the landmarks of this village. The place name ‘Naduvattom’ has its origins from two base words – ‘Nadu’ and ‘Vattom’ meaning ‘Center’ and ‘Circular Portion’ – exactly representing its center position between the villages of Neeleeswaram and Manjapra.
About the social and cultural background of the people of Neeleeswaram - it is a peace loving good-natured people. Most people follow either Catholic or Srinarayana tradition of beliefs and at the same time modulates all the social and cultural activities on the common ground of humanity.
