New River (Oregon)

The New River is a short river on the southern Oregon coast. It begins at Floras Lake and runs northward (almost NNE) to the Pacific Ocean a distance of approximately 10 river miles (16 km) flowing parallel to the ocean behind the foredune.[1] It is located about 8 miles south of Bandon, Oregon and 12 miles north of Cape Blanco at 42°59′57″N 124°27′28″W / 42.9993°N 124.4579°W / 42.9993; -124.4579Coordinates: 42°59′57″N 124°27′28″W / 42.9993°N 124.4579°W / 42.9993; -124.4579.

The river has little elevation change and mostly runs in low sand dunes and beach.

The New River is the southernmost area of record for the Rufous Hummingbirds and the most northern for Allen's Hummingbird to have been observed breeding. [2] Snowy Plover is present year round. The spring migration brings approximately 20,000 Aleutian Canada Goose (Branta hutchinsii leucopareia) and close to 100,000 shorebirds. [1]
