World War I andWorld War II , Vievis was near dividing line betweenLithuania andPoland , and the town was among those with the largestPolish minority in Lithuania , with roughly 77% inhabitants declaring themselves as Poles. The 17th century printing press became the reason why a 1970s
samizdat journal "Lustra dzion" edited byVincuk Viačorka cited "Jewie" as the place of its publishing (even though it was in fact published in Minsk).pl icon cite web | author=Ośrodek Karta (corporate author) | title=„Lustra Dzion” (Zwierciadło Codzienności) | publisher=Karta | year=2000? | work=Słownik dysydentów | url=http://www.karta.org.pl/WiadomosciBiogramy1.asp?DzialID=3&KategoriaID=53 | accessdate=2008-03-16 ] The printing press is also featured on the modern coat of arms of the city, adopted in 1999.Notes and references
