She won a bronze and a silver medal as a fifteen-year old at the 1984 in Los Angeles, California. Twelve years later she competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia and qualified for the 800 m freestyle final.
Her mother was a swimming coach who also taught Mark Foster.
Currently Sarah works for Northern Arena Learn to Swim and Fitness Facility, Silverdale, Auckland, New Zealand. Hardcastle lives in Auckland with her husband Lee and four children Iwan, Huw, Eve and Aled.
