The resort has 11chairlift s and 2 surface lifts covering 2,000 acres (8 km²) of terrain. Alpine has a vertical drop of 1,800 ft (550 m) with a top elevation of 8,637 feet (2,633 m). Minimal accommodations are available at the resort itself, so most people opt for a hotel at Tahoe City, Squaw Valley,Donner Pass , or Truckee.1982 avalanche
On March 31, 1982, one of the most deadly and destructive avalanches to hit a U.S. ski area struck Alpine Meadows. Seven people perished when a large natural avalanche over-ran and destroyed the building housing the ski area's avalanche control command post.
Role in California legal history
On
April 11 ,1991 , two friends were skiing at Alpine and collided with each other. The resulting lawsuit went to theSupreme Court of California , which ruled onNovember 24 ,1997 that skiers in California assume the risk of each other'snegligence (but can be potentially liable for reckless skiing). JMA ventures, owners of the Homewood mountain on Tahoe's west shore, recently purchased Alpine Meadows from the previous owners, Powdr Corp. The sale was finalized in July 2007.
