Career

Doncaster Rovers

Born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire,[1] Nelthorpe played for Brodsworth Miners Welfare and Frickley Athletic before he progressed through the Doncaster Rovers youth system.[3][4] He made his first team debut as a 56th minute substitute in a 33 draw against Luton Town in League One on 7 May 2005.[5] His first appearance of the 200506 season came after being introduced as an 80th minute substitute against Cambridge United in the Football League Trophy, which Doncaster lost 32.[6] He was loaned out to Conference North team Hucknall Town on 23 November and he made his debut in a 40 victory over Redditch United, during which he scored two goals.[7][8] He made five appearances for Hucknall, with his final appearance coming in a 20 defeat to Stafford Rangers, before returning to Doncaster in January 2006.[9] He made one more appearance for Doncaster this season, against Tranmere Rovers,[10] which he finished with two appearances.[11]

Nelthorpe signed a new contract with Doncaster in the summer and he joined Conference National team Kidderminster Harriers on a one-month loan on 10 October.[12] He made his debut in a 00 draw with Oxford United, and he nearly scored for Kidderminster during the first half.[13] He scored his first career goal against Droylsden in the FA Cup, and after Kidderminster decided against extending his loan spell, he returned to Doncaster in November after making six appearances.[14][15] This was followed by a loan spell at Gateshead, after joining in November,[16] where he made 19 appearances and scored eight goals.[17] Following his return to Doncaster, he had a run of seven appearances,[15] which started after coming on during the 32 victory over Crewe Alexandra in the Football League Trophy at the Keepmoat Stadium on 13 February 2007.[18] In the final game of the 200607 season, Nelthorpe scored his first goal for Doncaster against Northampton Town on 5 May, which finished as a 22 draw.[19] He had a trial with Chesterfield in May, with a view to him joining on loan.[20]

After making four appearances for Doncaster during the 200708 season,[21] he joined Halifax Town on a one-month loan on 10 January 2008.[22] Nelthorpe scored four minutes into his Halifax debut against Northwich Victoria, which finished as a 22 draw,[23] and he netted three minutes in his following game, a 22 draw with Rushden.[24] He finished the loan spell in March, after making 11 appearances and scoring three goals,[21] after which he joined League Two team Darlington on loan until the end of the season.[25] He made his debut in a 31 defeat to Bradford City and played for them in their play-off semi-final second leg tie against Rochdale, which resulted in a 54 defeat in a penalty shootout.[21][26] He finished the loan spell with eight appearances.[21]

He was handed a new one-year contract at Doncaster in July.[27] He rejoined Gateshead on a three-month loan in August, which he completed in November with 15 appearances and one goal.[28][29]

Oxford United

He was released by Doncaster at his own request in January 2009 and joined Conference team Oxford United the next day on a contract until the end of the 200809 season.[30][31] He made his debut in a 10 victory over Altrincham and scored his first goal with a shot into the top-left corner of the goal, which gave Oxford a 10 victory against Mansfield Town.[32][33] Nelthorpe was named on standby for the England C team, who represent England at non-League level, in February 2009, for a friendly against Malta under-21s.[34] He was sent off against Torquay United after clashing with Mustapha Carayol,[35] which resulted in a three-match suspension, and following this he said he was looking to use his aggression more effectively.[36] He made his return in a 21 victory over Kettering Town, during which he opened the scoring with a 20-yard free kick and assisted the second goal with a corner kick that was headed in by Chris Willmott.[37] He finished the season with 16 appearances and two goals for Oxford.[38]

York City

Nelthorpe was released by Oxford at the end of the season and he subsequently signed for fellow Conference team York City on 19 May.[39][40] He suffered from illness during much of York's pre-season, and during a friendly against F.C. Halifax Town, he was sent off for jumping dangerously with his arm raised.[41] He made his debut as a stoppage time substitute in a 21 defeat to former club Oxford on 8 August.[42] After failing to start any games for York, he requested a loan move away from the club in October.[43] He joined Barrow on loan until 1 January 2010 in November.[44] He made his debut in a 22 with AFC Wimbledon, assisting Jason Walker's goal through a corner kick.[45] He scored in a 22 draw with Grays Athletic and finished the loan spell with six appearances and two goals.[46][47] He joined Luton Town on trial in January 2010, starting a reserve team match against Peterborough United,[48] before signing on loan until the end of the 200910 season on 22 January.[49] He made his debut as an 83rd minute substitute in a 10 victory over Gateshead.[50] His loan period at Luton came to an end on 7 May,[51] having made eight appearances for the club.[47] He finished the season with eight appearances for York and the club announced that he would be released when his contract expired on 30 June.[47][52]

Gateshead

He agreed to sign for former club Gateshead on 1 July.[53] He made his debut in the opening game of the 201011 season, a 00 draw with Kettering on 14 August.[54] Nelthorpe's first goal came after scoring a 90th minute winner in a 10 victory over Southport.[55] He made 41 appearances in all competitions for Gateshead during the 201011 season, scoring five goals, before it was announced on 4 May 2011 that he would be released when his contract expired on 30 June.[55]

Gainsborough Trinity

Nelthorpe signed with Gainsborough Trinity in June 2011 on a one year deal.

Style of play

Nelthorpe is left footed and is able to play either as a left back or as a left winger.[56][57] He has also been played at left wingback, although he has stated his preference in playing a more attacking role, saying "Im not really the best defensivelyId sooner go at people".[30] While playing as a winger, he is "adventurous" and has a "willingness to run at defenders".[58][59] His skills have been praised as being "deft and quick" and his set pieces have been described as being "excellent".[60][61]

Personal life

Nelthorpe has two children with his girlfriend.[30] He was arrested along with York players Michael Gash, Michael Ingham and Michael Rankine in August 2009 following an incident involving two other men at a Subway outlet on a night out.[62] The four appeared at York Magistrates' Court on 14 January 2010 after being charged with affray.[63] Nelthorpe pleaded guilty to the charge of affray after appearing at York Crown Court on 1 September.[64]
