Political makeup

Following years of dysfunctional governance and failure to engage the public, Anglesey Council's Executive function was finally taken over in 2011 by the appointment of five commissioners by Welsh Government Minister, Carl Sargeant. The previous intervention in the form of Interim Managing Director, David Bolwes, came to an end in 2011, with no sustainable change having been made. The Commissioners, in their second appraisal report in summer 2011, said that concerns remain about sustained recovery and the danger that some elected members are merely waiting for intervention to end so that they may return to 'business as usual'. So far, the appointment of commissioners is widely seen to be a positiove move, with tangible improvements in the council's overall functioning.

Unlike most other councils in Wales, Anglesey's councillors do not divide along political-party lines. Following the 2008 elections, only Plaid Cymru and Labour have maintained a group on the Council. Some Councillors elected on party political tickets or believed to have party political allegiances do not form, or join, party groups. The remaining councillors, both party-political and independent, form a number of factions based as much on personalities as policy. Since the 2008 elections, the largest of these factions was the Original Independents (Welsh: Annibynol Gwreiddiol), with 22 councillors.

Elections take place every four years. The last election was 1 May 2008.[1]
