Prospect, Oregon

Prospect is an unincorporated community in Jackson County, Oregon, United States. It is located along Oregon Route 62 on the Rogue River, in the Rogue River National Forest.

History

] In 1888, there was a mill named Deskins Sawmill. The name of the community was changed to "Prospect" in 1889 because of plans made to run a railroad up the Rogue River, which would ostensibly improve the community's prospects.

The Prospect Hotel, which opened in 1894, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.citeweb|title=Oregon National Register List|url= http://www.oregon.gov/OPRD/HCD/NATREG/docs/oregon_nr_list.pdf |accessdate=2007-08-31]

As of 2007, the population of the community was 530.

Local events and sites of interest

Prospect hosts a bluegrass music festival and an airplane "fly-in"citeweb|title=Upper Rogue Regional Tourism Alliance: Fly In|url=http://www.upperrogue.org/prospect/flyin.html|accessdate=2007-08-31] in July, and a jamboree and timber carnival (a festival that includes lumberjack contests such as log rolling) in August.

Prospect is the site of the Prospect State Airport. The Prospect State Scenic Viewpoint is nearby.
