A blue-collar Great Lakes state with an important Catholic population, Michigan went to Al Gore in 2000. It was considered as a possible target for Republicans in 2004, who campaigned heavily in the state. However, the state went to Democratic challenger John F. Kerry, with a margin of victory of 3%.
