Ukhra ( _bn. উখড়া) is a census town under Andal police station [ [http://www.wbcensus.gov.in/DataTables/01/Table-3.htm District-wise list of stautory towns] ] of Durgapur subdivision in Bardhaman district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Geography

The Asansol-Durgapur region is composed of undulating laterite soil. This area lies between the Damodar and the Ajay rivers which flow almost parallel to each other in the region. The average distance between the two rivers is around 30 km. For ages the area was heavily forested and infested with plunderers and marauders. The discovery of coal led to industrialisation of the area and most of the forests have been cleared. Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Ukhra had a population of 19,868. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Ukhra has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 61%. In Ukhra, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Economy

Politics

Madan Bauri of CPI (M) won the Ukhra (SC) assembly seat in 2006 and 2001 defeating his nearest rivals Upender Paswan of JD (U) and Nirmal Maji of AITC respectively. Lakhan Bagdi of CPI (M) won the seat in 1996, 1991, 1987, 1982 and 1977, defeating Jethu Ram of INC in 1996, Gopal Mondal of INC in 1991, Haradhan Mondal of INC in 1987 and 1982, and Gopal Mondal of INC in 1977.
