The name is in honor of Karl Benz, inventor of the "Benz Patent Motorwagen", who was awarded the patent for the invention of the first automobile. The patent was dated January 29, 1886. [ [http://home.arcor.de/carsten.popp/DE_00037435_A.pdf DRP's patent No. 37435] (PDF, 561 kB, German) was filed January 29, 1886 and granted November 2, 1886, thus taking effect January 29.]

Karl Benz began to design engines in 1871, patented his first engine in 1879, founded "Gasmotoren-Fabrik Mannheim" in 1882, founded Benz & Cie. in 1883 under aegis of which he built and sold the first production automobile and, by 1899, became the largest automobile manufacturer in the world. He also founded the closely-held "Benz & Söhne" in 1906 which never was a publicly-traded company. In 1926 he became a co-founder of Daimler-Benz, precursor to Daimler AG, when Benz & Cie. merged with Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft during the chaotic economic crisis in Germany following World War I. He remained on its board of directors until his death in 1929.
