Sherkot is a city and a municipal board in Bijnor district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

History

Sherkot was founded during the reign of Sher Shah Suri, an Afghan ruler of Sur Dynasty, who became the Emperor of North India, between 1540–45 [http://dsal.uchicago.edu/reference/gazetteer/pager.html?objectid=DS405.1.I34_V22_279.gifSherkot] The Imperial Gazetteer of India, v. 22, p. 273.] . Under the reign of Akbar, it was the main town of the "pargana"; and in 1805, it was attacked by Amir Khan, a Pindari invader. Later during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, it was the scene of battle, between loyalits and the rebels. As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Sherkot had a population of 52,870. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Sherkot has an average literacy rate of 47%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 52%, and female literacy is 41%. In Sherkot, 18% of the population is under 6 years of age.
