Vassily Serafimovich Sinaisky (Russian: Васи́лий Серафи́мович Сина́йский, born in the Russian the Republic of Komi,
April 20 ,1947 ) is aRussia n conductor and pianist. He has since January 2007 been the principal conductor of the [http://www.mso.se/sv/OmMSO/Chefdirigent/ Malmö Symphonic Orchestra] inMalmö ,Sweden . He currently lives at Bachstraat inAmsterdam , nearby the Concertgebouw.He studied conducting with
Ilya Musin at the Leningrad Conservatory and began his career as Assistant toKirill Kondrashin at theMoscow Philharmonic Orchestra . In1973 he won the Gold Medal at theKarajan Competition inBerlin .Sinaisky was Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra from
1991 -1996 . He has also held the posts of Chief Conductor of theLatvian Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of theNetherlands Philharmonic Orchestra . He was also appointed Music Director of the Russian State Orchestra (formerlyEvgeny Svetlanov ’sUSSR State Symphony Orchestra ), a position he held until2002 . Sinaisky has been Principal Guest Conductor of theBBC Philharmonic since1996 , and is a regular and popular visitor to the Proms each summer.In 2004/5, Sinaisky enjoyed great praise for his debut with the
London Philharmonic , while his conducting of a new production ofShostakovich ’sLady Macbeth of Mtsensk at theKomische Oper Berlin also received unanimous critical acclaim in the German press.Upcoming highlights for Sinaisky include his debuts with NDR Hamburg and the Pittsburgh,
Seattle ,Indianapolis and Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestras. He returns to theLondon Philharmonic ,Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra ,RSB Berlin ,Czech Philharmonic Orchestra ,Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra andCity of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra .Sinaisky was Principal Guest conductor with the
Bolshoi Theatre . He conducted performances of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’sIolanta withWelsh National Opera , including one at theBBC Proms , as well as the aforementioned Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. In recent years, productions of Carmen andDer Rosenkavalier forEnglish National Opera were both highly praised.Vassily Sinaisky has made several recordings with the
BBC Philharmonic forChandos , including works by Szymanowski,Rodion Shchedrin , Balakirev andFranz Schreker and a series of recordings of Shostakovich’s film music. Vassily Sinaisky is represented by Intermusica.CDs
