Jajapur (also known as Jajpur) is a city and a municipality in Jajpur district in the Indian state of Orissa. It is popularly known as "Biraja Khetra", which translates as "the place sacred to Goddess Biraja", and is located on the banks of the Baitarani River. It was the capital of Orissa during the Kesari dynasty, later supplanted by Cuttack. Now, it is the headquarters of Jajpur district.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census [GR|India] , Jajapur had a population of 32,209. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Jajapur has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 69%. In Jajapur, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Places of interest

A historic site for pilgrimages, it has shrines dedicated to Biraja, Sveta Varha and Sapta Matruka among others, and at one time was intended to be the home of Lord Jagannath.Fact|date=May 2007 It is also believed to have once been the capital of the Kalinga empire. Jajpur also has an ancient pillar of Ashokan times called the Shubha Stambha.

Economy

There are about 10 steel plants in the vicinity of Jajpur. Kalinganagar, where a large number of mineral based industries are coming up, is slated to be one of the major industrial hub in India. However the issues relating to rehabilitation and displacement have been the main bottleneck in the industrial advancement of the region, one of the richest mineral belts of the country.Fact|date=March 2008

Politics

Current MLA from Jajapur Assembly Constituency is Parameswar Sethi of BJD, who won the seat in State elections of 2004. Previous MLAs from this seat were Suryamani Jena who won this seat in 2000 representing BJD and also in 1995 representing JD, Jagannath Mallik who won this seat representing JD in 1990 and also in 1985 and in 1977 representing JNP, and Niranjan Jena of INC(I) in 1980.
