About
All Microtel Inn & Suites hotels are new-construction, as opposed conversions from existing hotels that were previously flagged as other brands. The brand is the first in the economy segment to offer local and long distance calls in the continental U.S. and wireless high-speed Internet access as standard services. Hotels are typically two to four story buildings with interior corridors. Unique room features include a wall length mirror over the beds (as opposed to the more standard painting), wall-mounted lighting (as opposed to lamps) and window seat. Microtel has been ranked highest in guest satisfaction for guest service among economy hotels by JD Power and Associates for an unprecedented ten consecutive years as of 2011.[1]
Each hotel is independently owned and operated.
History
The first location opened in 1989 in suburban Rochester, NY (Henrietta). Twenty years later, there are now 300+ Microtels, including some internationally. Competitors include Red Roof Inn, Park Inn/Suites, Motel 6, and Sleep Inn. In late 2007, Microtel unveiled its new "Get Up and Joe" continental breakfast with pastries, hot and cold cereal, juice, & milk.
Change in ownership
On July 21, 2008, Wyndham Hotel Group purchased US Franchise Systems, Inc., owner of the Microtel Inns & Suites and Hawthorn Suites brands, from Global Hyatt. US Franchise Systems had previously sold the America's Best Inn (formerly Best Inns) chain to the Country Hearth Inns chain in 2005. That holding company is now known as America's Best Franchising Inc.
