Mian Mohammed Sharif (December 25, 1949 - October 22, 1997), D.Phil. FPAS, was a Pakistani mathematician and the Surveyor General (S.G.) of Pakistan from March 1974 to mid of 1981. He was one of the founders of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences.[1]

Early life

Mian Sahib, as he was affectionately known by his friends and colleagues, was born in Singhpur, Punjab, in India.He was born in an Arain family of India Punjab. He excelled in his studies as a student and obtained a B.A (Honours) in Mathematics, followed by his M.Phil and D.Phil in Mathematical sciences from D.A.V College Dayanand Anglo-Vedic Schools System in Jalandhar. He married Zubaida Khatoon, daughter of Dr. Badr-ud-Din of Railway Road, Jalandhar, and sister of his childhood friend Dr. Habib-ur-Rehman graduate of King Edward Medical University and an FRCS of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Civil services

M.M. harif joined the Survey of India [2] during the early 1940s. He was the only Muslim officer to be selected, along with a Hindu and an English officer. After the Partition he migrated to Pakistan and re-joined the newly formed Survey of Pakistan [3] and served as OC, Deputy Director Photogrammetry, Director Map Publications, Director Field Surveys and Surveyor General of Pakistan. His postings included Dehradun, Murree, Rawalpindi, Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur and Sylhet in East Pakistan. As Surveyor General he served under the governments of President Yahya Khan, Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Chief Martial Law Administrator General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq. He was the last civilian to serve as the Surveyor General of Pakistan. All subsequent S.G.'s are now Pakistan Army officers of Major General rank. He was preceded by Mr. Hassan and the succeeding S.G. was Brigadier Syed of the Pakistan Army.

M.M.Sharif represented his department at the Central Treaty Organisation (CENTO) and Southeast Asia Treaty Organization(SEATO). His foreign tours included Denmark, Germany, Iran, Jordan, Switzerland, Turkey, Thailand, UK and US.

Mr. Sharif died on October 22, 1997, in the family home in Rawalpindi, reputedly of a broken heart a year after the murder of his beloved wife.[citation needed] He was survived by his four grown children: Mrs. Sabha Naeem, wife of retired Brigadier Naeem (RV&FC), Farooq Zakhi, Daud Sharif & Zubair Sharif (deceased September 2009) and five grandchildren.

Salman Rashid, Mrs. Sharif's nephew, and a much acclaimed writer in Pakistan, has travelled to India and interviewed the son of one of the Sikh assassins of Dr. Badr-ud-Din and family, during the 1948 Partition, in Jalandhar, among others and various newspapers article have been published both in India and Pakistan.
