Plot

Stanley Yelnats IV is very unlucky. Due to his family's curse, he is sent to Camp Green Lake for wrongly stealing Clyde Livingston shoes from a charity auction. He is forced to dig holes using a shovel. There, he meets Zero, a lonely boy whose real name is Hector Zeroni. Stanley is called Caveman, and he attempts to teach Zero how to read and write. Zero eventually runs away after Dr. Pendanski insults him of his inability to read and write. Stanley also runs away to find him, worried about his chances of surviving the harsh desert. Stanley finds Zero in an old rowboat and sees a mountain resembling a thumb. Recalling the story of how his family got cursed by Zero's ancestor and how his great grandfather got robbed by Kathryn Barlow a famous outlaw, he climbs atop the mountain with Zero. When they finally reach the Big Thumb, Zero becomes unconscious. Stanley carries Zero to the top and sings him the lullaby he was taught, and since Zero is a descendant of Madame Zeroni - the local gypsy who cursed Stanley's family - the curse breaks. The boys return to Camp Green Lake and dig one last hole, but they unearth an old treasure chest where Stanley found a "KB" lipstick tube. They are surrounded by, not only yellow-spotted lizards, but by the harsh Warden Walker, Mr. Pendanski and Mr. Sir. Stanley's lawyer of the Texas General Attorney comes back to take Stanley and Zero. Zero reveals the treasure has Stanley's name on it. In a final-scene, Clyde Livingston is celebrating the success of Stanley's father's new agent against foot odor, Sploosh, created by Stanley's Father.
