KFJX was founded in 2003 as the Fox affiliate for the Pittsburg, Kansas/Joplin, Missouri market. It is owned by Saga Communications' Surtsey Media subsidiary, and is a sister station to KOAM-TV.

KFJX was launched primarily to bring a Fox affiliate to the area, since the closest Fox affiliates were located in Kansas City, Springfield, and Tulsa. KFJX may have also been launched in response to the Nexstar Broadcasting Group KODE-TV/KSNF duopoly, which began in 2004.

It airs a 9:00 PM newscast daily, produced by KOAM. That newscast debuted April 5, 2004, and expanded to include a weekend edition Fall 2005.

Digital television

Because it was granted an original construction permit after the FCC finalized the DTV allotment plan on April 21, 1997 [http://www.transmitter.com/FCC97115/chanplan.html] , the station did not receive a companion channel for a digital television station. Instead, on or before February 17, 2009, which is the end of the digital TV conversion period for full-service stations, KFJX will be required to turn off its analog signal and turn on its digital signal (called a "flash-cut"). The FCC recently granted KFJX permission for permanent post transition operation on channel 13, KOAM-DT's pre-transition digital channel.
