The Green Project

The Green Project

The Green Project is a nonprofit organization located in New Orleans, Louisiana and serves mainly Southeast Louisiana and the Mississippi Coast. The stated primary focus of The Green Project is the recycling of locally donated and reclaimed items. Items accepted for recycling include building components, materials, paints, and garden items. The Green Project also "operates a warehouse store that resells high-quality, salvaged building materials at low cost to the community, in the Bywater-Marigny area area of New Orleans, Louisiana." [ [http://thegreenproject.org/what_we_do.php The Green Project] - Official website] The store is dedicated to helping the environment by reducing the amount of usable materials placed in landfills or disposed of improperly.

Materials Accepted

The Green Project will accept most building materials, components, and paints, as well as certain household or garden items when dropped off at their site in Fauburg St. Roch.

Recent Projects

Following the damage to New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina, The Green Project worked to help save materials for reuse and to support rebuilding.

It was involved in the deconstruction of damaged or collapsed homes, light commercial wood framed buildings and interiors of larger, heavier structures. The deconstruction was carried out by hand as this allows the salvage of between 45 and 70% of the materials.

The saved materials are intended for resuse to help in the preservation of New Orleans' architectural history. In some case the personal items of New Orleans residents have been recovered and returned to the rightful owner.

Stock Carried

Past notables have included glass tiles, antique mantles and Spanish tiles. There are a variety of doors, windows, shingles, roofing, boards, bricks, fixtures, fasteners, molding, etc. – in quantities sufficient for repairs, small jobs, and, in a few cases, large projects.
