HMAS Launceston

HMAS Launceston

Three ships of the Royal Australian Navy have been named HMAS "Launceston" for the city of Launceston, Tasmania. A fourth was to be named, but this was rescinded.

* The S class destroyer HMS "Tasmania" was transferred from the Royal Navy to the Royal Australian Navy in July 1919. She was to be renamed HMAS "Launceston", but was instead recommissioned under her original name.
* The first HMAS "Launceston" (J179/B246/A120) was a "Bathurst" class corvette commissioned in 1942, served with the RAN until 1946, when she was transferred to the Turkish Navy and renamed.
* The second HMAS "Launceston" (FCPB 207) was a "Fremantle" class patrol boat laid down in 1980 and was decommissioned in 2006.
* The third HMAS "Launceston" (ACPB 94) is an "Armidale" class patrol boat commissioned in 2007 and is currently in service as of 2008.
