HMS Endeavour

HMS "Endeavour" was the name of nine ships of the Royal Navy. Three ships of the Royal New Zealand Navy have been called HMNZS "Endeavour".

Royal Navy

*The first "Endeavour" was a 36-gun ship purchased in 1652 and sold in 1656.
*The second "Endeavour" was a 4-gun bomb vessel purchased in 1694 and sold in 1696.
*The third "Endeavour" was a fire ship purchased in 1694 and sold in 1696.
*The fourth "Endeavour" was a hoy (boat) purchased in 1694 and sold in 1704.
*The fifth "Endeavour" was a cutter purchased in 1763 and sold in 1771.
*The sixth "Endeavour" was a 14-gun sloop, purchased in 1763 and wrecked in 1780 in a hurricane off Jamaica.
*The seventh and most famous "Endeavour" was HM Bark "Endeavour", originally "Earl of Pembroke", a 6-gun bark purchased in 1768. She was known as "Endeavour Bark" to distinguish her from her contemporary listed above. She was commanded by Lieutenant James Cook in his voyage of exploration in the Pacific, 1768–1771. She was sold in 1775.
*The eighth "Endeavour" was a schooner purchased in 1775 and sold in 1782.
*The ninth "Endeavour" was a survey ship launched in 1912, used as a depot ship from 1940, and sold in 1946.

Royal New Zealand Navy

* The tenth, HMNZS Endeavour (1956), served as the Antarctic support vessel from 1956 to 1962
* The eleventh, HMNZS "Endeavour" (A184), served as the Antarctic support vessel from 1962 to 1971
* The twelfth, HMNZS "Endeavour" (A11), is the current fleet tanker commissioned in 1988

Replica

In addition to these commissioned vessels, a sailing replica of HM Bark "Endeavour" is moored in the Australian National Maritime Museum.

Fictional

*HMS Endeavour, Lord Cutler Beckett's ship and flag ship of the East India Trading Company Armada in Pirates of the Caribbean. A ship of the line with well over 100 guns with additional cannons on the upper deck.
