USS Neptune

USS Neptune

Four ships of the United States Navy have been named USS "Neptune" after Neptune, god of the sea.

*USS "Clyde" (1863), a 294-ton side-wheel steam gunboat, was briefly named "Neptune" when first commissioned.
*The second USS "Neptune", a 1244-ton screw steamship, served during the American Civil War.
*The third USS "Neptune" (AC-8), a collier, carried the first United States troops to Europe in World War I.
*The fourth USS "Neptune" (ARC-2), a "Neptune"-class cable repair ship, served throughout the Cold War.

A fictitious nuclear submarine USS "Neptune" was the setting of the movie "Gray Lady Down".
