Critical Review: A Journal of Politics and Society is a quarterly academic journal published by Routledge for the Critical Review Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3) educational organization. It was founded in 1986 by Jeffrey Friedman, who subsequently received an MA in History at the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in political science from Yale. The initial purpose of the journal was to bring critical scrutiny to bear on libertarian and classical liberal scholarly ideas, and to subject mainstream scholarly ideas to similar scrutiny. Since then, the journal has evolved into a leading scholarly forum for critically assessing the realities of democracy and capitalism. It places particular emphasis on the actual functioning of mass democracy in the light of political scientists' demonstration of "public ignorance" of all things political, which has significant implications for such questions as electoral "mandates," media bias, academic bias, and the autonomy of state officials from public scrutiny.
