The 1982 Embassy
World Snooker Championship took place at theCrucible Theatre ,Sheffield between the30th April and16th May 1982 .Notable Moments
* The reigning champion was
Steve Davis , who had dominated the season along withTerry Griffiths , and expectations were high for a Davis-Griffiths final. In fact, Davis, worn out from a year on the road, lost 1-10 to Tony Knowles in the first round and Griffiths, unable to motivate himself after Davis's defeat, lost 6-10 in the same round toWillie Thorne . The World No 1 at the timeCliff Thorburn who was another favourite for the title also lost toJimmy White 4-10, his first ever victory at the Crucible.*
Alex Higgins ' semi-final against Jimmy White was regarded as one of the greatest matches at the Crucible. White was appearing in his first semi-final and at one stage led Higgins by 15 frames to 14. Needing one of the last two frames to reach the final, he led 59-0 in the 30th frame only for Higgins to score a frame-winning 69 break. The break is remembered because the balls were not best placed on the table but Higgins supreme potting led him to not only clinch the 30th frame but also the decider to win 16-15. His 18-15 victory overRay Reardon in the final is also best remembered as he was captured embracing his wife Lynne and baby daughter Lauren after the final in front of a worldwide television audience of millions. Reardon meanwhile became the oldest ever finalist at the age of 49 years and 7 months.*
Willie Thorne made the second all time highest break at the time when he made a 143 againstAlex Higgins in the quarter-final.*
Jim Donnelly became the first of many Scottish players to play at the Crucible when he lost to Ray Reardon 5-10.* This was the first tournament in which the top 8 seeds had to play in the first round, taking the tournament from 24 to 32 players. This format still remains today.
