= The Event =

The 1995 Embassy World Snooker Championship took place at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield between the 14th to the 30th April 1995. Stephen Hendry won his fifth world title beating Nigel Bond 18-9.

Notable Moments

* Before the first round match between Jimmy White and Peter Francisco, there were unusual (huge) bettings all over the UK on a 10-2 win for White. The match did indeed finished 10-2. WPBSA was informed before the match and the President of the Embassy World Championship organization watched every frame of it. White soon afterwards was free from the WPBSA inquiry into alleged match-fixing but Francisco later got a five-year ban from snooker when the inquiry concluded on May 8th 1995. He was also stripped of his £8,750 prize money he got for losing in the match.

* Andy Hicks became the first player since Terry Griffiths in 1979 to reach the semi-finals at the first attempt. He beat Steve Davis, Willie Thorne, Peter Ebdon before losing to Nigel Bond 11-16 in the semis.

* Stephen Hendry made the third 147 in the championship's history and the first to do that and going on to win the title for the fifth time.

* This is so far the last World Championship to start on a Friday (which the 14th was on Good Friday in 1995 and a Saturday and Sunday final (on 29 and 30th April) rather than the Sunday and May Day Holiday as it also did since it became a 17 day tournament in 1982, 1985 and 1990.
