Naartjie Scientific classification Kingdom: Plantae Family: Rutaceae Genus: Citrus Species: C. reticulata C. nobilis Binomial name Citrus reticulata Citrus nobilis
BlancoA naartjie (Citrus reticulata, Citrus nobilis), or nartjie, (both pronounced nahr-chee) is a soft loose-skinned South African citrus fruit.
The name is Afrikaans and is originally from the Tamil word nartei meaning citrus. The word has been used in South Africa since 1790, but the first written recorded English use is by Lawrence Green in the Tavern of the Seas, 1947.[1] The "tjie" on the end of naart, indicates a diminutive.
Description
The naartjie is a small citrus fruit with an easily-peelable skin and easy-to-separate segments. The taste is a sweetish mix of mandarin and orange.
