- Barry's Bay, Ontario
Barry's Bay is a community in the township of Madawaska Valley,
Ontario , Canada, located two hours west ofOttawa , with a population of approximately 1,100 people. The town, which was officially incorporated in 1933, was also the residence ofJanusz Żurakowski , a famous Polish aviator who helped test Canadian jet aircraft. A memorial was created in honor of this bit of history, which includes a statue of him and a one third scale model of the Avro Arrow, arguably the most famous Canadian aircraft he's known for testing. The Park and Barry's Bay can be visited from Ottawa by heading west, on theTrans-Canada Highway route #17 , then turning onto route #60 at Renfrew.Barry's Bay was also the Central Canada finalist in the 2006 CBC "Hockeyville " competition.History
This area of
Renfrew County (Sherwood Township), was first settled in the 1940s, along with other communities on theOpeongo Line . The first permanent dwelling at what is now Barry's Bay was built in 1941.An Urban Ledgend exists that unknown to the government, a squadron of these jet planes still exist, hidden in local barns and old lumber mills, ready for action!
