Performing arts
Golden Wings Theatre Company
The drama department of South is known as Golden Wings Theatre Company. Director: Lori Steele Naglak; Assistant Director: Teri Dougherty; Technical Director: Fred Bauer.[3] They are a part of the International Thespian Society as Thespian Troupe 6463.
Golden Wings is a student run organization with anywhere from 40 to 100 cast and crew members for any given show.[4] The club usually produces two musicals and one play during each school year. Their 2009-2010 show line-up was Zombie Prom, Anything Goes, and A Midsummer Night's Dream.[5] This was the first time Golden Wings performed a piece by Shakespeare.
In 2008, they were the first high school in the world to perform Frankenstein - A New Musical, the musical adaption of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.[6] On opening night, two of the three writers of the show were in the audience. Following the performance, they went backstage to congratulate the director, cast, and crew, saying that it was the best high school show they had ever seen and that it far exceeded their expectations.[7]
In past years, many students from Golden Wings have competed in the Pennsylvania State Theatre Conference and have qualified to compete at the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska; in 2008, all seven students who competed at the state level qualified to move on to Thespian Festival, and one senior won a Technical Theatre Scholarship from the PA Chapter of the International Thespian Society at the State Conference. In 2009, two seniors won scholarships from the State Conference - one for Technical Theatre and one for Theatre Performance. For the second time since Golden Wings joined the International Thespian Society, Troupe 6463 has been invited to perform a 2-hour musical at the 2010 State Conference.[8]
Music Programs
Council Rock High School South has several music groups, including a Marching Band, a Symphony Orchestra, and a Symphonic Choir, as well as several smaller groups like the Jazz Band and the South Vocal Ensemble.
Marching Band
On January 11, 2011, the Council Rock High School South Marching Band announced their planned trip to San Diego, California over the 2011-2012 winter break. Here, they will perform as part of the Bridgepoint Holiday Bowl Massed Band Halftime Show. They will also perform in the Big Bay Balloon Parade, compete in a marching band competition, and parade down main street in Disneyland.
Orchestra
The Council Rock South Orchestra has already performed for over 60 festival, school, neighborhood and overseas concerts. Two of our highlights were performance tours of Scotland and Italy. The Orchestra traveled to Italy in 2007 and performed 4 concerts in Rome, Siena, and Padova and performed with the Orchestre Giovanile del Veneto as part of the Gala Concert in the 17th Annual International Music Meeting. In May 2003, conductor Christopher Simon led his orchestra on a tour of Scotland with his colleague Rick Bogle and the Council Rock High School North Symphony Orchestra, performing in notable halls in Elgin and Edinburgh.
In 2009, the Orchestra was honored to perform in a "Side-By-Side rehearsal" with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Kimmel Center. The combined group was led by Rossen Milanov and played Light Cavalry Overture, "Nimrod" from Enigma Variations, and Russian Easter Overture. In 2007, the Orchestra performed in another "Side-By-Side" concert with the Delaware Valley Philharmonic Orchestra, where they performed the opera overture La Gazza Ladra.
The orchestra’s success in Scotland led to performances at the new United States Constitution Center and at various adjudication festivals where they have consistently earned superior ratings. Since 2004, members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Trenton Symphony Orchestra, Ocean City Pops, and Temple University faculty have given master sectionals four or five times each year in an effort to raise the level of play to new heights. In April 2005, the orchestra traveled to Baltimore’s Meyerhoff Symphony Hall to work with members of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Comments by the Baltimore Symphony's members echoed the praises by numerous other professional musicians that Council Rock High School South is unique in its ability to draw so much talent into one school. Later that month, the Orchestra hosted Its First Annual Orchestra Festival. The unique festival featured six high school full orchestras from Eastern Pennsylvania that were adjudicated by a panel of three professional orchestra conductors. Due to its success, Council Rock South hosts the festival every year and will hold the 7th annual festival on May 6, 2011[9].
On March 1, 2010, the Orchestra announced its upcoming trip to France during Spring Break 2011, visiting such locations as Paris, Monte Carlo, and Nice. At the time of announcement, the trip included performances at La Salle Gaveau and a rehearsal with the Nice Conservatory of Music[10]. On April 13, 2010, the Orchestra announced that it would also be the only non-professional Orchestra performing at the Auditorium Rainier III in Monte Carlo, with the proceeds from that concert benefitting the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.
Bomb threats
On November 8, 2006, two bomb threats were directed at both Council Rock High School South and Council Rock High School North. Seven teams of bomb dogs went in to both high schools the next day. There were three more bomb threats directed at Council Rock South the morning the school opened after the initial threat to both schools.[11] The school received another bomb threat on January 23, 2007. The threat was written on a bathroom wall.[12] No bombs were found in the school during any of the incidents. Another threat was received in early 2010, but the threat was determined not credible, and the student responsible has since been expelled.
