- West Village, Dallas, Texas
The West Village is a development in the Uptown area of Dallas,
Texas (USA). The West Village is located on and around McKinney Avenue, the "main street" of Uptown Dallas. It is north of the LoMac district and east of the Turtle Creek neighbourhood.About
Some people call it "The Bubble" because practically everything one needs (restaurants, clothing, grocery, bars, movies) can be found within walking distance of the development. Built in 2000 in the New Urbanist style and currently managed by CWS Partners out of
California and Gables Properties headquartered out ofAtlanta, Georgia , it is a mixed retail residential development which is part of the larger Uptown section of Dallas. The name West Village is a take off from the neighbourhood bearing the same name inNew York City and has no real significance except as a marketing tool. Like the established urban neighbourhoods around it, West Village is pet and pedestrian-friendly, and the surrounding area is home to a largeGLBT population.Transportation
To reach it from
downtown Dallas via public transportation, there are several options.Dallas Area Rapid Transit 's DART LB|21 bus route runs north on McKinney Avenue and passes through the West Village. The DART DART R|style=nl and DART B|style=nl light rail lines stop atCityplace Station , an underground station located at the east end of the development below US 75 (North Central Expressway). Finally, theMcKinney Avenue Transit Authority 's M-line streetcar travels from Ross and St. Paul streets in downtown Dallas to Cityplace Station and loops around the West Village. The streetcars are restored from the early 1900's. Each streetcar has a name and history on where it was restored from. The cost to ride the M-Line trolley is free (donations accepted). Parking for the development is also free, as it is in most of Dallas.Amenities
The West Village has many apartment buildings and row/town houses in its immediate area. It also has many retail shops. Besides the usual "life support" establishments such as laundry/cleaners, a large 24 hour drugstore, personal grooming establishments, and several other small retail outlets, it has shopping, restaurants and cafes that draw people from other areas of the city.
Major retail in the West Village includes a large Borders bookstore, a large supermarket, an "art house" movie theater with 5 screens, upscale clothing shops for men and women, and shops for home accessories.
It has several restaurants, most with outdoor seating available. Types of cuisine include pizza, Italian ice cream, a wine bar, Mexico City Mexican, Tex-Mex, Asian Cuisine, and many other restaurants in the immediate area.
Future development
The block bounded by McKinney Avenue on the west, Blackburn Street on the north,
Cityplace Station on the east and Cityplace Boulevard West on the south contains a driving range owned by Hank Haney. It is scheduled to eventually be replaced, however, by two residential/retail buildings.Gallery
