John Somerset Pakington, 1st Baron Hampton, GCB (20 February 1799 – 9 April 1880), was an English politician.

Early life

Born John Somerset Russell [ Assumed in 1830 by Royal License, the surname of "Pakington" on inheriting the estates of his maternal uncle Sir John Pakington, 8th and last Baronet, of Ailesbury] , son of William Russell and Elizabeth Pakington, who came from a prominent Worcestershire family; he was educated at Eton [ Old Etonians born in 1790's] then Oriel College, Oxford.

Political career

Before becoming a Conservative member of parliament for Droitwich in 1837. Was Secretary of State for War and the Colonies in Derby's 1852 government; [ Was sworn is as a Privy councillor in 1852 ] and First Lord of the Admiralty in Derby's 1858 and 1866 governments [ Was Awarded Grand Cross Order of the Bath when Lord Derby retired on 1859 ] . In 1867 Pakington moved back to the War Office, and continued to serve in that office under Benjamin Disraeli.

Later life

Was created a baronet in 1846 [ By Robert Peel's 1841 –1846 administration despite being against his free trade policies.] and Baron Hampton of Hamptom Lovett in 1874 .
President of The Royal Statistical Society 1861–1863and Chief Civil Service Commissioner from 1875 until his death.

Family life

Married three times, initially on 14 August 1822, to Mary (née Slaney) daughter of Moreton Aglionby Slaney until her death [ Died 6 January 1843 ] and had one son. [ John Stanley Pakington (13 July 1826 – 26 April 1893)]
Secondly, on 2 June 1844, to Augusta (née Murray) daughter of Rt. Rev. George Murray until her death [ Died 22 February 1848 ] and had one son. [ Herbert Perrot Murray Pakington (12 February 1848 – 22 December 1906)]
Thirdly on 5 June 1851, to Augusta Anne [ Was the widow of Col. Thomas Davies M.P. ] (née Champion de Crespigny) daughter of Thomas Champion de Crespigny.
