Henrico High School is located just outside the Richmond city line in Henrico County, Virginia. The high school features an outdoor campus, built in the same style as Varina High School and J. R. Tucker High School. It is unique among Henrico County High Schools in that it has two specialty centers--the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years/Diploma Program and the Center for the Arts Program (CFA). ["Schools: 9 Specialty Centers." "Henrico County Public Schools". 17 Feb 2007. [http://www.henrico.k12.va.us/schools/specialty.html] ] The school colors are green and gold, and the mascot is the Warrior. It is one of the oldest schools in Henrico County, and it has a highly diverse student population. The school has recently added 2 new buildings to its campus, and has just finished remodeling its athletic building. Henrico has one main rival: Highland Springs High School. In the past, John Marshall High School was considered a big rival, but despite being less than two miles apart, the two schools are in different sports districts and thus don't compete often. A rivalry with Deep Run High School has also developed in recent years because of the International Baccalaureate program. For many IB students, Deep Run would have been their home school. On October 10, 2007, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine spoke at the Senior Convocation.

International Baccalaureate

Henrico High is a member of the International Baccalaureate Program. This program encompasses the MYP program for 9th and 10th grade students and the IB Diploma for the 11th and 12th graders. Throughout the program, a long list of assessments need to be completed for the international program, including personal projects, group 4 experiments, and extended essays.

Center for the Arts

The CFA Speciality Center includes VMT (Vocal Music Theater), dance, visual arts, and theatre programs. All areas cover a variety of topics. VMT students are trained in music, acting, dance, ensemble, and performance. Dance studies ballet, modern, jazz, variety dance, composition, and performance. Visual artists cover topics such as art history, artist vocabulary, while developing artistic skills and studying related areas. Theater involves becoming versed in acting, movement, improvisation, creative writing, dramatic literature, and performance. Showcases specified for each division during each semester are performed twice a year; one involving all divisions in the fall, and division specified showcases in the spring. Seniors in each division also have a showcase in the spring, displaying and reflecting their work in the Center over the past four years. Guest artists are often brought into class to enhance the learning experience of the Center students. Through the center, students are presented with many scholarship opportunities like working in the local area's arts fields and participating in internships.

Campus life

The student composition is notably different from the demographics of the surrounding area. This is largely due to the CFA and IB centers, which find a comfortable home at Henrico High School and attract students from all corners of the county. The feeling of unity and acceptance among the student base is something to be acknowledged and could even function as a model for other schools wishing to integrate diverse and challenging programs into their school.
