New York International Independent Film and Video Festival (NYIIFVF) is a film screening event in various American cities.[1] It was founded in 1993, and its website claims it has been recognized by the film and entertainment industry as one of the leading film events on the independent festival circuit.[1] The festival hosts film, music and art events in Las Vegas, New York and Los Angeles. The festival is associated with the movie distribution company ITN Distribution and publishes the Independent Film Quarterly magazine.[1] The festival has hosted works by such directors as Abel Ferrara and Mark Mahon.[2][3] As well as the original documentary film from the Ghost Adventures crew.

Controversy

The festival, which caters strictly to independent filmakers has struggled with public perceptions. It was criticized by The Village Voice in 1997, and IndieWire in 1999.[4] The festival has been criticized for its open policy of accepting nearly every submission sent to it, as well as its $300 entry fee.[5] However, it says it's the only major festival that refunds entry fees to filmmakers whose works are not accepted. The Internet Movie Database accepted the festival for years[6] but, according to its website, NYIIFVF no longer meets its criteria for inclusion. Under the same ruling IMDb does not recognize films shown in Cannes Film Markets, Cannes Short Film Corner, and American Film Market.[7]

Despite its detractors, the festival is cited on the resumes of high-profile actors. Kelly Ripa and Patricia Heaton, who won Best Actress Awards from the festival in 1999 and 2003 respectively, have both boasted NYIIFVF awards in their bios.[8][dead link][9][dead link]Its filmmakers have been interviewed by Movie Maker magazine[10] and the Digital Format. magazine[11]
