He was drafted 128th overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. In the 2008 off-season he signed a two year two way deal with the Blue Jackets.
His father, Ken MacKenzie, is the former coach of the Sudbury Wolves in the Ontario Hockey League.[citation needed]
