Born in Missouri but raised in
Minnesota , Ranheim went to high school inEdina, Minnesota , where he was the captain of his high school hockey team. Known for his speed and penalty killing ability, he played college hockey at theUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison . Selected in the1984 NHL Entry Draft by theCalgary Flames , he would spent five seasons with the Flames. He was traded to theHartford Whalers on March 10, 1994 and after three seasons the team relocated to Raleigh,North Carolina to become theCarolina Hurricanes . After three season with the Hurricanes, he was traded to thePhiladelphia Flyers on May 31, 2000. He was traded once more to thePhoenix Coyotes on December 19, 2002 and finished the2002-03 NHL season with Phoenix before retiring from hockey.Transactions
