The external laryngeal nerve is the smaller, external branch (ramus externus) of thesuperior laryngeal nerve . It descends on thelarynx , beneath thesternothyroid muscle , to supply thecricothyroid muscle .It gives branches to the
pharyngeal plexus and the superior portion of theinferior pharyngeal constrictor , and communicates with thesuperior cardiac nerve behind thecommon carotid artery .Clinical significance
The external branch is susceptible to damage during
thyroidectomy , as it lies immediately deep to thesuperior thyroid artery .External links
