The HALO Trust

The HALO Trust is a registered British charity and American non-profit organization whose purpose is to remove the debris left behind by war, in particular, landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) that might present a danger to local civilians. "HALO" is an acronym of Hazardous Area Life-Support Organisation.

HALO operates in nine countries and has over 7,000 mine-clearers. HALO's largest operation is in Afghanistan where the organization operates as an implementing partner of the United Nations Afghanistan's New Beginnings Program (UNANBP).

The organization was founded by Colin Campbell Mitchell, a British member of Parliament and former Colonel in the British Army.

HALO Trust has removed 30,000 mines along with bombs and ammunition in Angola since 1994, during the last years of the civil war. [http://www.voanews.com/english/2007-07-24-voa17.cfm Work Intensifies to Clear Angola's Landmines] , July 24, 2007. Voice of America News]

Following the Russian-Georgian conflict in South Ossetia in August 2008 the Russian side accused the HALO Trust of having trained and equipped Georgian engineering and demolition forces used in the assault against Tskhinvali, South Ossetia.
