Juniata (also known as Juniata Park) is a neighborhood in
Northeast Philadelphia , which is a section of the city ofPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania ; however, it is sometimes said to be inNorth Philadelphia because it lies west ofFrankford Creek . Juniata is located south of the Juniata Golf Club in Tacony Creek Park. It is bordered to the north and east by Frankford, to the northwest by Feltonville, to the west by Hunting Park, and to the south by Harrowgate and Port Richmond. Along with the nearby neighborhood of Frankford, Juniata'sZIP code is 19124. Because it is located west of the Frankford Creek, Juniata is sometimes said to be in North Philadelphia.The Juniata municipal golf course, designed by
Ed Ault in 1930, is an 18-hole, par-66 course that features the Frankford Creek as a water hazard in six of its holes.The
Market–Frankford Line elevated train stops in the neighborhood at the Erie-Torresdale Station, located at the intersection of Kensington, Erie, and Torresdale Avenues.The "Juniata News" is the neighborhood's weekly community newspaper, first published in July 1934.
The neighborhood is home to Hopkinson Elementary School and Holy Innocents Catholic Rectory and School.
Most of the neighborhood's retail and commercial establishments are situated along Kensington, Castor, Hunting Park, and Erie Avenues.
In 1935, the
Carl Mackley Houses (now Apartments) were constructed on the block bounded by Castor Avenue, Bristol, M, and Cayuga Streets.Juniata is a largely
working class , heavily unionized,Irish American community. Juniata also has a large population ofPuerto Ricans andDominican American s. As of the 2000 Census, the racial makeup of Juniata is 41% White and 40% Hispanic. Like much of the city's Lower Northeast neighborhoods, Juniata's crime rate has generally risen over the past decade; theft and vandalism are all too common in certain pockets of the neighborhood.In the sixties and seventies, it served as a great escape for kids in the surrounding neighborhoods who would walk or ride their bikes to it for a small touch of country in the city.
