borough ofLancashire ,England , on theNorth Yorkshire andWest Yorkshire borders. It adjoins the Lancashire boroughs of Burnley andRibble Valley . It has a total population of about 90,000 people, and is represented in Parliament byGordon Prentice (Labour).It was created in
1974 as a result of local government reorganisation from the formerMunicipal Borough s of Nelson andColne , the formerurban district s ofBarnoldswick ,Barrowford ,Brierfield ,Earby andTrawden , and from parts ofBurnley Rural District andSkipton Rural District . It was named after the historical district ofPendle Forest . The Barnoldswick, Earby and Skipton parts are historically in theWest Riding of Yorkshire . The name Pendle comes from the Cumbric word 'Pen' meaning hill, a reference toPendle Hill , a major landmark in Pendle.The area is closely associated with the
