Jan Crawford Greenburg

Family life

Greenburg grew up on a farm in rural Alabama.

She graduated from the University of Alabama in 1987 and the from the University of Chicago Law School in 1993. Greenburg is married to Douglas N. Greenburg, a partner at Latham & Watkins, with whom she has four children, Carolyn, Louisa, Jack and Page.

Greenburg currently lives in Washington D.C.

Career

Greenburg joined the "Chicago Tribune" as a reporter in 1987. After graduating from law school, she covered legal affairs for the "Tribune" beginning in 1993. She began covering the Supreme Court for the "Tribune" in 1994.

In 1996, Greenburg won the "Tribune"’s top reporting award for her work in a 13-part series on the South a generation after the civil rights movement. In 2001, her work was honored with the "Tribune"’s top reporting award.

Greenburg covered the Supreme Court for 12 years, and has interviewed nine of its justices during that time period. She secured recent interviews with both Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. and Associate Justice John Paul Stevens. In his first television interview, Chief Justice Roberts discussed the court, his views on the law, and life since taking office. Greenburg also talked with 86-year old Justice John Paul Stevens during his first network television ever. Justice Stevens reflected on his memories of the man who appointed him to the Supreme Court in 1975, former President Gerald R. Ford.

Starting in 1998, Greenburg provided legal analysis on the Supreme Court for the widely-viewed PBS television program "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer." At PBS, where she helped to provide live, gavel-to-gavel coverage on PBS of the Supreme Court confirmation hearings of Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito. She also served as the Supreme Court analyst for "Face the Nation" on CBS.

Greenburg has taught journalism at American University and frequently speaks about the court to universities, law schools, legal organizations and civic groups across the country.

Since 2007, she had been senior legal correspondent for ABC; and she writes a blog entitled [http://blogs.abcnews.com/legalities "Legalities."]

Selected work

Her book on the modern Supreme Court and its justices, "Supreme Conflict: The Inside Story of the Struggle for Control of the United States Supreme Court", was published in 2007. It became a New York Times bestseller.
