The Air Accident Investigation Bureau of Singapore (Abbreviation: AAIB) is a statutory board of the Ministry of Transport in Singapore. It is an investigation authority in Singapore for air accidents and serious incidents in the country for local and foreign civil aircraft. The AAIB also participates in overseas investigations of accidents and serious incidents involving Singapore aircraft or aircraft operated by a Singapore air operator.

Duties

The Air Accident Investigation Bureau conducts investigations in accordance to the Singapore Air Navigation (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents Order 2003 and Annex 13 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation which governs the member states of the International Civil Aviation Organization that conducts these investigations.

The process involves the gathering, recording and analysis of all available information of this incidents.

History

The Air Accident Investigation Bureau was set up in 2002 after the SilkAir Flight 185 and Singapore Airlines Flight 006 crashes. The bureau set up a facility in 2007 to analyse data from flight data recorders (informally known as "black boxes") installed on commercial aircraft.
